I stopped by the Kewalo cook off this morning and the place was buzzing!! Both Chef Lisa and Chef Wes was prepping and cooking their version off Fried Rice. I left early to go Tako diving with Randal, however I was able to taste Lisa's Rice and it was guuudd! It had very nice flavors .. I liked the heat (chili peppers?) and the Cilantro. Anything w/Cilantro will taste guud. I'm sure Wes' Rice was also very guddd.
Judge's Score Card
Lisa is kind of bummed because everyone said it was a tie. And in my HONEST opinion it was a tie, both were extremely good.
Lisa:
Taste: 10/10 - nice heat from the red pepper. Flavors blended well.
Presentation: 10/10 - Good color and even dice on the vegetables and meat.
Originality... 2/5 umm... dis is fried rice anything goes, but point for using da brown/white rice mixture. Extra point for using Shibata's nice new grill.
Side Dish: Fishcake... Da Oio fish cake is always a winnah!
Wes:
Taste: 10/10 - Nice burn crispiness... well seasoned wok. Plus da bacon oil. Da lil smokies added some good flavor.
Presentation: 10/10 - Nice touch adding the slice egg, green onion and cilantro right at the end.
Originality... 2/5... same ting dis is fried rice... Liked da fact that he did throw the rice back in to get more burn afterwards... again well seasoned wok. Extra point for da "terracotta soldier" aged burner... antique cast iron but she go!
Side Dish: Little Smokies, Bacon, and Heine's... alway a winnah!
A Hui Hou Malama Pono
Saying goodbye to Chica she's going back to School / "Work." I didn't really surf or hang wth you dis time around and hopefully I won't have the opportunity to when you get back!
Thomas is going to Florida... checking out da retirement communities... jus joking going for work, gone for a week. Will be back but then gotta go back to DC.
Travel safe and go early... also watch out for da pat down, check in front of da line before you stand in 'um, look for da cute one (well cutest one possible anyways). Kind of dumb story but when I was travelling to Kona a lot I was pulled aside by a gay guy and frisked during a "random" search... good thing nevah have da guy packing in his underwear back then, he nevah have an excuse to check da package.
SO invaded ML today - easy sheriff, I just talking about the parking lot - your subjects all left anyways. Park facilities served as a great wind barrier for todays Iron Chef Challenge between Chef Zane and Chef Lau - New Years Special!!!
Attendees: Wes, Lisa, Shibata, Kaipo, Lele, Randy, Thomas, Tom, Timmy, Crystal, Tammy, Nelson, Royal, Wilcy, Joey, Gary, Katie, CT, Jonny, Kumu
Absent - Chairman Kadowaki, must've got in trouble after yesterday's session, maybe he was scared come. Otherwise you know who you are...
Dishes: Fried Rice (Chef Lau version &Chef Zane version), Fishcake (from Lisa), Lil smokees & bacon (from Wes), Kauai Opihi (from Timmy), Chinatown Chicken (from Jonny), Banana Bread (Kumu), Kal-Bi (Shibata), Coffee (Gary), Green Tea (Jonny's magic cooler, Randy, Thomas, Wes, Lisa), Teriyaki Venison (CT), and other various snackees (jerky, nuts, mochi, vegetables...)
Whose Cuisine Reigned Supreme? - it was determined a draw and the consensus was that a tie-breaker may be necessary.
Challenge Pics
Disastah 1
Only Chica, Kumu, Randy, Kaipo and Lisa hit the water today because was so busted up. Chica inspired me - I needed to keep my streak alive on this, my last day of vacation and went out for one wave. But did any of you see a body in the water? Everday Eric said that while he was out search and rescue buzzed by on a jet ski asking if he seen anybody floating... Watch the news tonight and be on the lookout when you're surfing this week!
Disastah 2
I write this blog in a state of depression, now that the challenge is pau the full gravity of the situation has hit me... No, not that Chica is leaving - sad about that too (I didn't get her SUB this time too), but I gotta go back to work tom'w after a 3.5 week vacation! Damn, back to the grind of waking up early, cooking for the week, packing lunch, ironing clothes, working all day, squeezing in errands and fun on the weekends...
Iron Chef
1st SinDay of the year and it's on - Fried Rice Showdown, Iron Chef Lau vs Chef Zane. Kewalo parking lot - Be there! Chef Zane has raised the stakes also offerring a side dish - her ono fishcake, no word on what Chef Lau may counter with. Dean - definitely worth a trip down the coast, we may need an un-biased judge.
SurfPics
From the Point - some gurl and Anthony preparing to get shacked!
Then over to SO (no shots from RtNxt although I caught like 5 waves there) but here's Stevie.
NewJ went on a beer run, but here's a couple before shots.
Chica will be leaving us tom'w for the big island, but as Jonny wrote (other than that I missed country) here's a shot of her SUPeeing. Was right behind her on this wave.
I guess it works out SUP'rman gets hurt and then the mainland sub-contractor comes by to fill in. I guess I'll just have to suck it up and take his share until he's back in action once the sub is gone.
Reminder: Show-down tom'w, it's on like donkey kong!
Iron Chef Lau vs. Challenger Lisa!!!
Not really secret ingredient, secret dish: Fried Rice
Sponsored by da Chairman Kadowaki (threw down $100 for the ingredients)
Das right come down tomorrow as we kick off da first Sinday of da New Year with competition! Should be good they will be cooking with gas burners and Woks.
From what I understand there will also be side dishes... Lisa - Homemade Fishcake (ONO!), Wes - Omelet Station?!
Additional burners and GAS provided by Gary.
Should be a good one!
Report
Oh yeah the report... was clean and small. Tide too high in the morning, thought it would get better as the tide dropped butt... was... but then it just died down too. Oh well at least there'll be fried rice and grean tee tom'w!
I gotta say was gud cuz I know Kumu was disappointed when I canceled the country surf for town cuz I thought country was flat and the 7 o'clock report said 2-4 and Klean :( However, I never caught the Point lefts soo nice before. Small barreling lefts! Althought Kado attest that on its on days the lefts are much better than the rights... ( I said that I only seen Big Point Rights good off that's why).
Happy New Year!
Report - waves were waist to maybe chest high. Seemed like a West wrap, weird angle was jacking over the reef. Wish I had my shortboard!
Resolutions
I never really was into the whole resolution thing until... Last year I had 1 resolution... well it was more sarcasm than anything but it came true (good or NOT)... Work less, Surf MORE!
So this year I'll be a little more ambitious and go for 2!
#1 - Get a job (once again sarcasm turning into reality)
#2 - Become UnSingle again... Hmmm... that'll make a guud blog name to replace UnEmployed.
The perpetual bliss the last 6 months must be wearing me down!
Where was everybody? Nelson came early to do his usual thing because he gotta work today, and said only had Mark and Kado's cars and surfed most of his session by himself at SO!!! I came down around 8:30 after some french toast and straight to a front row stall, the winds had just started to swirl.
Long glassy nipplers on the set and still kind of empty. Around 10-11 though the south winds took over, but it's still waaaay better than yesterday! I hope everybody continues with their new years resolution to spend more time with their family (that's what is, right?!).
Just want to Wish Everyone a Happy New Year!
Bittersweet is the best way to describe it, once the long weekend's over it's back to work : ( So dreading it, but I'm very thankful I have a job. It's all relative and I have lots to be thankful for this past year and going into the new year, like not having to go to CA on Sunday for a few months... I have my health and can surf (barring some disaster tonight)... my house that I just finished cleaning... family and friends... definitely all the best of the best!
Hau`oli makahiki hou & malama pono. This past year's been great, best wishes to you and your ohana in 2010!
Aloha,
Kumu
